Hi! Welcome to my website. My name is Siân and I enjoy solo hiking (mostly!) across the UK and beyond, as well as fitness, outdoor photography and history.

This website contains links to what I’m up to across the web.

Tarn Hows – Following on from the previous post..

Tarn Hows caught the eye of Beatrix Potter when the Marshall family decided to sell land. Unable to buy the full estate, Potter bought part along with the National Trust in 1930 for £15,000 to save it from development. She later sold her areas of land to the National Trust and bequeathed the rest in her will, ensuring its protection for public enjoyment.

Tarn Hows is a beauty spot offering a 1.5 to 2-mile accessible circular walk in the Lake District. The main route is a well-maintained, largely level path around the water suitable for families, wheelchairs, and pushchairs.

The are mountain views of the Langdale Pikes and Coniston Old Man, and is known for its conifers and rare Belted Galloway cattle.

Tarn Hows in the Lake District. A beautiful walk with the weather switching between sun, snow and rain, creating rainbows on repeat!

This is quite an accessible walking spot, with a gravel path around the perimeter of the tarn (tarn shown in second photo).

There were originally three smaller tarns, Low Tarn, Middle Tarn and High Tarn. Until 1862 the area was part of the open common grazing of Hawkshead parish, with the remaining enclosed land and some local farms and quarries owned by the Marshall family.

James Garth Marshall gained possession of all of the land around 1862, and made a series of landscape improvements, including expanding the tree plantations around the tarns and the construction of a dam at Low Tarn that created the larger tarn that is there today.

I'll add more details on my next post about Tarn Hows.

Hiking on 'the roof' of Yorkshire ⛰️
Whernside, a little eerie up on the ridge, but breaks in the cloud allowed the extensive views to still be seen.
The walking route then went by the Ribblehead viaduct.

* Highest point in North Yorkshire
* Summit is on the county boundary with Cumbria

Glowing in the sunset light with snowy scenes, on land which possibly has a dark history..

The story goes that a man named William Harrison went missing in 1660 from Chipping Campden. When searching for him, only some bloodstained clothing was found. Suspicion was placed on his servant and two of the servant’s relatives, and all three were subsequently hanged on this spot according to some. However, two years later, William Harrison returned claiming he’d been abducted, although the account is very questionable.

On a lighter note, the surrounding area is absolutely beautiful, with so many walking options as well as being on the Cotswold Way. Lots of local wildlife too.

Broadway Tower was built in 1798-99 by the 6th Earl of Coventry. It passed to other hands over the years and today is open as a museum.

Winter wonderland views on the Cotswold Way ❄️

I was absolutely in awe of the magical wintery scene at Broadway Tower in Worcestershire. The bright landscape, with a colourful and textured sky above, was a treat - particularly with the Welsh mountains in the far distance. Deer roam part of the grounds and separately, the area is a very popular sledging spot in such weather 🌨️
