Hi! Welcome to my website. My name is Siân and I enjoy solo hiking (mostly!) across the UK and beyond, as well as fitness, outdoor photography and history.

This website contains links to what I’m up to across the web.

Where do you like to walk near home?👣

These pics are not far from me. I'm really pleased the drier and warmer weather is on its way, it's much more comfortable for sunset watching 🔆

In other news, I have more updates coming from my trip to Sweden last week, and I plans for two more adventures for April in the making 🥾 🌱

I don't know where to start! Walking city routes, a 17th century warship and pioneering ocean technology for filming by James Cameron!

The City of Stockholm is situated on fourteen islands and on the banks to the archipelago where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. The city centre is virtually situated on the water.

I walked to the Vasa museum island of Djurgården, which has a fascinating - almost fully intact - 17th-century ship, that was salvaged 333 years after sinking on her maiden voyage in 1628.

I'm by no means exaggerating when I say I was amazed at what I saw. It's bigger than what I thought it would be and I think it's beautiful - stupidly built, but beautiful.

Poorly designed, it did not hold enough ballast for stability - and if it did, the ship would sink so low water would enter its lower level gun holes.

Continuing the ocean and shipwreck theme, there's a James Cameron exhibition about the complexities of the finding and filming under water. I was pleased to see props used in the making of the Titanic film on display.

Overall the museum is one of the best I've been to in terms of displays, size and information.

My trip to Sweden was last week, and I have some beautiful shots coming up from hikes there 🌲🌲🌲

Solo exploring Stockholm before the hiking starts 🔆 🥾

This is my first trip to the city, so I decided to base myself centrally near the pretty area of Gamla Stan (old town), but for added novelty, I stayed on a boat situated on the sunset side of the island!

Gamla Stan on the island of Stadsholmen, dates back to the 13th century, and consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets and archaic architecture.

The tall building by Lake Mälaren in the sunset pictures, is Stockholm City Hall, where the Nobel Banquet is held after the Nobel Prize Ceremony.

It's such an interesting city, very walkable from place to place, and easy to prepare a route to follow to get a good feel for the city.

More coming - city and countryside, walking, views and history!

Loughrigg Fell - one of the smaller Wainwright peaks in the Lake District, but offers panoramic views that rival its much taller neighbours 🏔️

I took a different route involving scrambling to get here, but there is a laid trail and steps to the summit (ascending from the north side near Grasmere, and White Moss car park), making the walk fairly accessible for families who hike, although there are some steep and rocky sections.

Panoramic views from the trig point include the Langdale Pikes, Coniston Fells, and Windermere.

Tarn Hows – Following on from the previous post..

Tarn Hows caught the eye of Beatrix Potter when the Marshall family decided to sell land. Unable to buy the full estate, Potter bought part along with the National Trust in 1930 for £15,000 to save it from development. She later sold her areas of land to the National Trust and bequeathed the rest in her will, ensuring its protection for public enjoyment.

Tarn Hows is a beauty spot offering a 1.5 to 2-mile accessible circular walk in the Lake District. The main route is a well-maintained, largely level path around the water suitable for families, wheelchairs, and pushchairs.

The are mountain views of the Langdale Pikes and Coniston Old Man, and is known for its conifers and rare Belted Galloway cattle.
